In light of the LAPD being mobilized, it is reasonable to assume that Chief Moore is prioritizing his needs within the Department. We would like to believe that imposing discipline should not be on top of his list. Especially, when he is demanding that the rank-and-file carry out their duties and responsibilities with the utmost compassion to the public. Moore should also extend the same compassion to his employees during these trying times. Sending a captain and a sergeant to serve a sick employee with disciplinary action is not the best leadership move to build up teamwork while demanding unselfish dedication from those in the front line.
As other essential services are placed on hold, I think imposing discipline on employees should NOT be his top priority, particularly when there is no urgency. It was devastating to see an employee being served with a disciplinary penalty while on sick leave and avoiding being infected by the coronavirus. Unfortunately, it does not matter that this employee’s medical leave was caused by injuries sustained on the job; and by the same dedication Chief Moore is now demanding from every member of the organization.
This incompassionate administrative decision reminded me of a cancer employee who was served with termination, but later settled due to lack of evidence and the case being out of statute. As the old saying goes, “actions speak louder than words.”
